Bolangir, 21 July
Panic gripped Bolangir after unidentified assailants gunned down dreaded criminal, Raju Nag, in full public view in the town this evening.
Sources said that Nag, a notorious history-sheeter, fell to two bullets fired from close range when he had been to a physiotherapy clinic near the hospital square with his wife. The incident took place at about 6.15pm.
“When we were entering the clinic, three persons riding a speeder bike came and opened firing at him. We immediately rushed him to hospital where he succumbed,” said the deceased&’s wife, Laxmi Nag.
The in-charge of the surgery ward of the hospital, Dr PK Mohapatra informed that Nag, who was grievously injured, was still grasping for breath when he was rushed to hospital but died while being shifted to the ward.
The SDPO Mr Narayan Nayak suspected that the assailants might belong to the locality.
“We think that the criminals are locals and were keeping a tap on Nag&’s movement for quite some time. We are yet to arrest anyone and seize the weapon. Our investigation is on,” he said, adding that a small revolver was used in the crime.
It is believed that a rival gang was involved in the murder. Only two days ago, Nag had an altercation with some people at Malgodown area wherein two persons had sustained injuries and to be hospitalized.
With a long criminal antecedent, Nag was involved in a sensational double murder apart from a series of tender fixing and land grabbing cases.
Meanwhile, people here are afraid that the murder of Nag will prompt his associates to launch a counter-attack on the rival groups.
“We have reasons to worry. As such sophisticated firearms have found their ways into Bolangir town and the possibility of a gang war following Nag&’s murder can not be ruled out,” said a concerned citizen, wishing not to be named.
