Jagatsinghpur, 1 October
Ahead of the student election in Alaka Mahavidyalaya under Biridi police limits on 8 October, unidentified criminal(s) hurled two crude bombs in the college campus today.
The hurling of bombs comes in the wake of arson in the college last night wherein the office of the principal and some classrooms were allegedly set on fire.
Although it is not known whether it was the same set of miscreants who perpetrated both the acts, a section of students suspect that the incidents were aimed at creating tension in the college ahead of the student union election, and maybe an attempt to cancel the election.
According to reports, the two bombs were hurled at about 10.30 am while the students were attending classes. “While one bomb was lobbed at the old college canteen damaging the door, the other bomb was aimed at the office of the principal, which thankfully did not explode. We have seized it and started investigation,” said SI of Biridi police station, Mr Gangadhar Saseni.
Police rushed to the spot after principal Ms Basanti Singh lodged an FIR.
In the alleged arson incident, a major part of the principal&’s office was gutted while furniture in the classrooms were destroyed.
“We suspect that it is an attempt to stall the election by a section of candidates whose chances of winning are dim. We request the police to arrest the criminals and punish them,” said Ms Niharika Nayak, a candidate, adding the election should not be cancelled under any circumstances.
