The zonal round of 7th Young Astronomer Talent Search (YATS), which aims at nurturing the minds and imagination of budding talents to explore the mysteries beyond the earth’s horizon and also to provide an ace platform for high school students to explore space science and astronomy, was conducted here today.
The programme was organised by Tata Steel in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium.
The zonal competitions also included inter school quiz and art competitions. More than 500 students representing around 50 schools from Bhubaneswar and nearby districts participated in the competition.
In the zonal round, successful participants selected from preliminary written rounds demonstrated innovative scientific models on the theme of the year, "The Mars Expedition".
The deputy director of Pathani Samanta planetarium, Mr Subhendu Pattnaik, educationist Prof Suryakant Mohapatra, along with noted artists and critics, Mr Manas Jena and Mr Bijay Nayak, acted as members of the jury that selected the finalists.
Tata Steel will honour the top-20 young scientists selected through eight such zonal events held across the State, on the birth anniversary of ace astronomer Pathani Samanta, said a company officials.
Tata Steel will also organise their exposure visit to Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro). While the semi-final and final of the quiz will be held on the platform of CII’s "Enterprise Odisha", the talents of the art competition will be showcased in a reputed art gallery of the state.
