In a shocking incident eight newborn babies died allegedly within a span of seven hours at the district headquarter hospital here on 22 October. The deaths took place at the SNCU (Special Neonatal Care Unit) of the hospital triggering tension amongst local people.
Dr Bikrant Kindo, the chief district medical officer, maintained that the deaths were due to the fact that some of the infants were born premature while others had complication out of septicemia beside congenital disease.
Dr Kindo also pleaded that the hospital has only 12 beds in the section where every day 20 to 30 infants are admitted. He informed that a committee will inquire into the recent deaths.
It may be recalled that a similar incident at Burla had caused an uproar in the state and a probe committee had been formed.
