The migrant landings on Thursday came after a 651 people arrived in Cagliari on Sunday aboard a Spanish navy ship after they were rescued in the Mediterranean.

Ahead of the G7 summit in Sicily, the UN children's organisation urged leaders of the world's wealthiest nations meeting on Friday and Saturday to address the ongoing crisis in the Mediterranean, where over 50,000 people have made the crossing to Italy this year and more than 1,250 have perished — including 200 children.
