The tomatoes procured by NCCF and NAFED had been retailed, initially, at Rs.90/- per kg and then reduced to Rs.80/- per kg from 16 July.
Amid skyrocketing prices of tomatoes across the country, a farmer in Maharashtra's Pune district claimed to have earned more than Rs 2.8 crore by selling tomatoes.
Sales have already started at several points each in Delhi, NOIDA, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur and Arrah through NAFED and NCCF, an official press note said.
This initiative also involves setting up virus indexing labs as per latest protocol for testing of quality planting material.
Elaborating on the same, Tomar said that NAFED has been directed to export 50 thousand metric ton wheat to Afghanistan and export 40 thousand metric ton wheat to Lebanon under G2G arrangements.
Nafed, which holds the Central buffer, has been directed to distribute onions in Delhi through stores of Safal, Mother Dairy, the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation (NCCF) and its own outlets at a fixed rate of not more than Rs 24 per kilo.
The constant fall in prices and subsequent lower remuneration in the past few weeks has led to outbursts and protests where farmers have thrown tonnes of onions on roads, while one farmer made national news by sending his meagre returns to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
