East Pakistan

Nixon’s folly

Nixon watched keenly and reflected on the widening gulf between USSR and China including ideological differences and border clashes, and also the Soviet withdrawal from the Chinese nuclear programme. He envisaged a policy change to end Chinese isolation and thereby weaken Soviet influence and power in a significant manner

Reminiscences

In 1957, Sheikh Mujib, as a young minister, had set up the Film Development Corporation on behalf of which Matiul Islam later came to Calcutta to import twelve Bengali films. He met Satyajit Ray, and the maximum price was paid for Apur Sansar Rs 25,000!

A time of tragedy and hope

The troubling question which rankles till today is why wasn’t anything done to prevent the tragedy? No country other than India really played any role to intervene to prevent the tragedy at any stage, although Soviet help to India in discharging this role should certainly be remembered. The United Nations also failed to safeguard human rights and democracy, and to prevent massacres.

Triumph in 1971?

Pakistan's generals, whether Field Marshal Ayub Khan or Yahya Khan could not see through Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's game of wanting to get rid of the East so that he could be the Prime Minister. Even as late as 1971, President Yahya Khan could have negotiated with the Bangabandhu for an amicable settlement. Instead, they sent General Tikka Khan to Dhaka to perpetrate one of the biggest pogroms in the annals of history

Lessons of the past

While Nixon and Kissinger adamantly supported the army rulers of Pakistan, the carnage in East Pakistan continued. The Nixon administration put considerable premium on its reliance on Islamabad for facilitating normalized relations with Beijing, as that was its top foreign policy concern. Kissinger was categorical, 'Yahya must be kept afloat for six more months'

Tribal Vs Non-Tribal

As a matter of fact, CAA does not apply to the tribal areas of Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura as included in the Sixth Schedule, and the area covered under the inner line notified under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873.
