Mooshahary for politics?
“I am a free citizen now and may think of joining active politics,” said RS Mooshahary, the outgoing Meghalaya governor who was the guest of the month at a programme hosted by Guwahati Press Club on 13 July. Answering questions, the former chief of the Border Security Force and also elite National Security Guards, said he’d wanted to join politics a long time ago and “politics at that time was basically a tool to serve the people and the nation. Now, of course, the situation has changed a lot”. Mooshahary hails from a remote village in the Gosaigaon locality of lower Assam.
On the charges that the Centre preferred former police or military officials for governors in North-east states, Mooshahary said it was New Delhi&’s prerogative, and trashed the allegation that the Centre&’s tendency was to undermine the elected government in insurgency-affected states by appointing former “men in uniform” as governors.~ Nava Thakuria
Fun and games
BOTH the Manipur police and the Assam Rifles are engaged in counter-insurgency operations but never in tandem. An instance of this manifested itself last week. Jiribam district additional superintendent of police arrested one Seino Guite, a self-styled general secretary of the United Tribal Liberation Army, which is in “Suspension of Operaion” mode with the Centre and the state government, for allegedly extorting money. When Major Anand Tampi of the 22nd Battalion Assam Rifles, stationed there, heard about this, he stormed into the Jiribam police station demanding Guite&’s release, in the process even allegedly slapping the ASP in front of his police commandos. The latter could not take it lying down, so they thrashed Tampi black and blue. An FIR has been filed against the major. What the incident reveals is the alleged nexus between Assam Rifles’ officers and militants in the sharing of booty! ~ Yambem Laba
