In Donetsk, Ukraine, Jamaican sprint hurdler Yanique Thompson smashed a 14-year record to bag her country&’s first gold medal in athletics’ World Youth Championships. The 17-year-old clocked 12.94 seconds to win the 100m hurdles at the RSC Olympiyskiy on Friday. Thompson became the first Jamaican 100m hurdles gold medallist at the WYC, and the first to hold a world record in the event at any level, after bettering Adrianna Lamalle’s 13.08, which had been set in 1999. "It’s amazing!" exclaimed a stunned Thompson.

More memories

Kiran More had not seen a Test match before touring the West Indies in 1982-3 with the Indian squad as Syed Kirmani’s understudy. “I never saw a Test match before that tour,” he said in Mumbai on Friday night at a ceremony organised by the MIG Club. More had to wait for three more years after that visit to the Caribbean islands to make his Test debut at Lord’s in 1986, though he had by then played in One-Day Internationals.

Bribe bid

Concacaf says it has identified a suspect accused of attempting to bribe two Belize players into throwing their Gold Cup match against the USA. A Concacaf statement did not reveal the identity of the alleged match-fixer but a probe was carried out after claims from Woodrow West and Ian Gaynair. West and Gaynair turned down the bribe, and the USA ended up winning the match 6-1.

Hockey row

Pakistan hockey is in turmoil after a row between national coach Hanif Khan and the national federation’s coaching consultant Tahir Zaman during the recent World League in Malaysia where the team finished seventh in the eight-team tournament.

Mirza&’s hope

Her career played havoc with by injuries, Sania Mirza reckons that age is fast catching up with her but hopes to add a few more Grand Slam trophies to her collection before bidding adieu. “As you grow older, it’s harder to stay fit. Every day you wake up with pains which you don’t know you had," she said.

Duleep Trophy
Kerala will for the first time host the final of the Duleep Trophy at Kochi’s Nehru Stadium from 17 October. The semi-finals will be held there between 10 October and 13 October.
