Proving his relevance in the squad, Pakistan’s chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq’s nephew Imam-ul-Haq on Wednesday struck a hundred on his debut and helped his team register a seven-wicket win in the third ODI against Sri Lanka.

Imam’s century came through a dramatic sequence. The 21-year-old was reprieved on 89, having been given out caught behind by Niroshan Dickwella off Lahiru Gamage.

Imam said his heart was in his mouth when he was given out. “I thought I had missed a great chance of scoring a hundred,” the top-order batsman said, according to an AFP report.

“But Hafeez told me to wait as the ball had touched the ground, so I am lucky and proud to have scored a hundred on my debut and that too with a record,” Imam added, thanking Mohammad Hafeez who remained not out on 34 runs.

In his 125-ball knock, Imam hit two sixes and five boundaries to keep the Abu Dhabi crowd off their feet.

Besides propelling the team to the victory, Imam became only the second batsman from Pakistan and 13th overall to score a hundred on ODI debut.

Pakistan currently lead the five-match ODI series by 3-0 and will host the remaining two matches in Sharjah on Friday and Monday.
