After becoming the world’s most expensive defender (via a reported £50 million deal to Manchester City), Kyle Walker paid tribute to Tottenham Hotspur and their fans in a touching post as he bid farewell to the Lilywhites after eight seasons of service.

Walker uploaded a video of himself, in which he is seen playing across different seasons, on his Facebook page with the caption: “To Tottenham Hotspur , my teammates and all of the amazing fans. I just want to say a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you've done for me and all of your support over the past 8 years. I had a brilliant time at the club and can take many special memories away with me. Thank you”.

The 27-year-old had a difficult start to life at White Hart Lane, for while his physical attributes were impressive, he was often found lacking in technical departments like passing, crossing etc.

Initially spending the first two seasons at loan in the Championship with Sheffield United and Queens Park Rangers, respectively, Walker established himself as Spurs’ first choice right-back from the 2011-12 season onwards.

From being seen as a talented but inconsistent prospect, Walker worked hard on all aspects of his game to become a well-rounded defender and was widely regarded as one of the best right-backs in the league in the past few seasons.

There is no denying that Walker is a top-notch talent but his reported transfer fee of £50 million has beggared belief and is emblematic of the hype that surrounds British players in the current transfer market.
