Indian cricketers were in festive mood on Tuesday and some of them were seen celebrating Mahalaya, a Bengali festival that marks the beginning of Durga Puja.

Former India cricketer and commentator VVS Laxman wished his fans on the occasion, saying: “Best wishes to all on auspicious occasion of #Mahalaya. May everyone experience joy and prosperity. Shubho Mahalaya!”

Spinner Harbhajan Singh also joined the celebration as he tweeted: “Khub bhalo katuk pujo.. Subho #Mahalaya (May you have a great time during Puja).”

Former opener Virender Sehwag shared a picture of goddess Durga on Twitter and wished his followers with a Sanskrit shloka. “#Mahalaya antorik shubheccha. Ya Devi Sarva Bhuteshu ,Shakti Rupena Samsthita. Namastasyai Namastasyai , Namastasyai Namoh Namah!”

It is believed that on the day of Mahalaya, goddess Durga was created by gods not only to defeat evil Mahishasura but also to destroy all evil powers from the earth.

The day is also marked as the conclusion of Pitra Paksha and beginning of Devi Paksha.
