Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has left the Italian Serie A side by mutual agreement on Tuesday, an official statement on the club’s website read.

“We would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Luciano Spalletti for all of his hard work and the significant contribution he has made to the club since his return,” Roma president Jim Palotta was quoted as saying by the club website.

“Under his stewardship this season, the team has won more Serie A points and scored more goals than any side in Roma’s history. We wish Luciano all the best for the future,” Palotta said.

This was Spaletti’s second-stint at the capital club, having won the Coppa Italia twice and the Supercoppa Italiana once during his first tenure. After resigning in September 2009, Spaletti managed Russian side Zenit, where he won the Russian Premier League twice (2010, 2011-12), Russian Cup (2009-10) and the Russian Super Cup (2011) once.

Spaletti was appointed as Roma manager in January 2016, after his predecessor Rudi Garcia had been sacked for a poor run in the league. The Giallorossi recovered from their slump to finish third in the Serie A and bettered their position in 2017 by finishing as runners-up to eventual champions Juventus.

Speculation is mounting that the 58-year-old Italian will be taking up the vacant job at Serie A side Inter Milan and an official announcement is likely to be made by the end of the week.
