SIR, ~ Allow me to say a few words on the Ekadashi system, which involves much suffering on Brahmin widows of the 24-Parganas and neighbouring districts. The Ekadashi comes twice in a month i.e., on the 11th of the new moon or the full moon. On these days the poor Brahmin widows are bound to fast strictly for 24 hours, without taking even a drop of water! Brahmin widows of all ages are sufferers, from a girl of tender age to a worn-out woman of 60. The condition of widows in other provinces of India is far better than in Bengal, particularly in the above-mentioned districts. I pray the orthodox Hindu leaders to think over this matter seriously.
