A four-year-old girl died and her 12-year-old sister hospitalised after consuming tea their mother allegedly laced with poison to apparently kill her husband, a police officer today said.

The incident occurred at Govinda Sardar Para, about 25 km from here on Jan 18, the officer said.

Sita Rani Debbarma (29) offered tea laced with poison to her second husband Goutam Debbarma, apparently to kill him, but he didn’t take it, Uttam Bhowmik SP (Police Control), said.

"Their two daughters, Shriya Debbarma (4) and Merry Debbarma (12), sipped the tea and fell sick," Bhowmik informed.

Shriya died on the way to the hospital while Merry is struggling for life at the GB hospital here.

The police have registered a case and arrested Sita.
