Kendrapara, 6 November
The state forest department has decided to install steel-net -barricade to stop intrusion of wild boars and spotted deer into the places of human settlements lying in close vicinity of Bhitarkanika wildlife sanctuary.
The mob fury and burning down of Gahirmatha forest range office on 18 October following the death of a local due boars’ attack apparently spurred the officials to take such a decision. The wild boar habitation corridors located in vicinity of village areas are being brought under barriers. Net barricades would be made up of galvanized steel materials which would act as deterrent for the itinerant animals. The steel nets would cope with the salinized atmospheric climate and would also be durable, said Divisional Forest Officer, Rajnagar Mangrove (wildlife) Forest Division, Kedar Kumar Swain.
The scheme would be implemented in a phased manner. Two forest blocks of Gupti and Sansarpatia have been identified as boar-infested zones where acts of trespass by animals are pronounced. Six kilometer stretch will be fenced with galvanized steel barricades. Tenders for the project has been invited and it would be commissioned very shortly, he added.
Earlier the department had installed 5 km long shock-inducing solar-powered fencing from Talchua village to Rangani to ward off animals from straying into villages. The experiment has yielded limited success because of technical snags in solar-powered implements.
Mangrove forest cover within the sanctuary is home to thousands of wild boars who are plant eating herbivorous animals. But in recent years, the sharp increase in population of these animals has emerged as a major cause of worry for wildlife sanctuary officials. A 62-yearold man was killed following wildboars attack earlier this month. The death has triggered mob fury with angry locals setting ablaze the Gahirmatha forest range office at Sasanapeta.
