Paradip Port continued to achieve greater heights in terms of cargo handling despite the economic slowdown. The port handled 34.12 million tonnes of cargo in the first six months of the current financial year by end of September 2013 as compared to 25.63 million tonnes of cargo handled during the corresponding period of the previous year.
This is an increase of 33.13% and is also 7.53% higher over the target fixed for the period, said port sources here.
On a month wise break-up, the Port handled 5.08 million tonnes of cargo during September 2013 only as compared to 4.55 million tonnes handled in the corresponding month of previous year which is 11.54% higher. During September 2013, 2.34 million tonnes cargo was exported and 2.74 million tonnes cargo was imported through the port. There is an impressive increase of 84.92% in export cargo witnessed during the period compared to the same period of last year.
Thermal Coal traffic has exhibited a growth of 46.82%. Similarly POL Traffic has increase by 16.21%, Iron Ore traffic registered a growth of 144.42%, Coking Coal 18.11% and other cargo traffic grew by 39.77% compared to the same period of previous year. Paradip Port has retained achieving the second highest position in terms of cargo handled and also in terms of percentage of growth in traffic among all the major ports till the end of September 2013.
The average turnround time improved by 13% each over the corresponding period of previous year and 8% over the target fixed for the year. Rail borne traffic improved by 42% during the month and the same is improved by 45% up to the month over the corresponding period of the previous year.
743 vessels entered the Port and 742 Vessels sailed out during the first six months of this financial year compared to 599 vessels entered and 600 vessels sailed out during the corresponding period of the previous year, said the port officers while giving details of the performance.
