MUMBAI, 14 JUNE: Hackers have hit Mumbai&’s cops where it hurts most. Several city police personnel have discovered that their salary accounts with Axis Bank have been emptied through mysterious mass withdrawals over the past two days. Mumbai cops’ salaries are directly credited to their accounts with Axis Bank although senior IPS officers have maintained their accounts are with the State Bank of India.
Preliminary investigation suggests hackers have withdrawn money in euros in Greece. Jolted by the reports, many cops were seen lined up at Axis Bank ATMs across the city to ascertain whether their salary accounts are still secure or not.  The precise number of accounts hacked was not known but the Maharashtra DGP Mr Sanjeev Dayal held a meeting at the state police headquarters to assess the damage. A team under a DCP rank officer has been formed to investigate the matter. Mumbai cops have a special cyber crime cell at the Bandra Kurla Complex where offences related to hacking or cell phone eavesdropping are handled by trained cops. The department is believed to have its own “official “hackers who are trained to selectively snoop on a section of Netizens or “usual suspects.” But they operate within the country.  The cyber experts with the city cops have reportedly alerted their counterparts abroad to look for the hackers.
The Axis Bank has reacted to the mass hacking with a single-line response that it was probing the matter at its end. The precise amount withdrawn in euros and its rupe equivalent are yet to be officially confirmed. An ACP who has his salary account with the bank says he instantly gets an SMS whenever he withdraws money.
But many who found their accounts depleted  say they have not received such text messages, which confirms the accounts were hacked.
