Militants kill two policemen in Srinagar
SRINAGAR, 22 JUNE: Terrorists struck in the heart of the city killing two policemen in the crowded Hari Singh high street, three days ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Jammu and Kashmir. Terrorists using silencer-fitted pistols carried out near simultaneous attacks at Jehangir Chowk and Sarai Bala injuring head constable Mohammed Maqbool and constable Nazir Ahmed. While Mabool died on his way to hospital, Nazir Ahmed succumbed to his injuries when he was being operated upon in the hospital. The PM is to visit the valley on 25 June to inaugurate the Banihal and Qazigund train service. pti

CPM supporters shot dead
BEHRAMPORE, 22 JUNE: Two CPI-M supporters were shot dead last night at Ekdala village in the Rejinagar police station area in Murshidabad, police said. Two others accompanying the deceased were also shot at during a clash between the CPI-M and the Congress. Leaders of both the parties admitted that the murders were political. On their way back home from poll campaigns for the CPI-M contestant from Ekdala, bombs were hurled at the deceased – Debsharan Ghosh (45) and Amar Ghosh (38) – and their aides Mr Mrityunjay Ghosh and Mr Baidyanath Ghosh, who survived the midnight attack. Debsharan died on the spot while his nephew Amar succumbed to bullet injuries on the way to hospital. sns

Emergency landing after bomb scare
MUMBAI, 22 JUNE: A Kuala Lumpur-bound Oman Air flight from Muscat with 226 passengers and 11 crew on board made an emergency landing here today following a mid-air bomb scare. After the plane made an emergency landing, it was taken to an isolation bay and fire service and bomb disposal squad were deployed. Security agencies searched and frisked each and every passenger and baggage but nothing was found, Mumbai Airport spokesperson said. Later, the aircraft was cleared by security agencies after inspection of passengers, check-in baggage and cargo. pti

7 killed in Mumbai building collapse
MUMBAI, 22 JUNE: Seven people were killed and six others injured when a building came crashing down in suburban Dahisar today, exposing the poor housing conditions of the metropolis and its adjoining areas yet again. This is the fourth tragedy since April this year. The building – ‘Piyush’ – collapsed at around 6.30 am, civic authorities said, adding that most of those trapped in the rubbles were local vegetable vendors. The civic authorities had vacated the building two years back as it was in a dilapidated condition. pti
