Despite a strokeful fifty by captain Rohit Sharma, Mumbai Indians failed to continue winning momentum on Monday as they lost to Rising Pune Supergiant by three runs in a thrilling Maharashtra derby match of the Indian Premier League at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

Chasing 161 runs at their home ground, Mumbai made a hesitant start as the openers Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler managed to score just 33 and 17 runs respectively.

Following their dismissal, Mumbai’s consistent hitter Nitish Rana (3) too failed miserably.

At the middle-order, Rohit Sharma emerged as the knight in the shining armour and scored his first fifty of the season.

The 29-year-old struck three sixes and six boundaries to excite the Wankhede crowd.

However, Pune pacer Jaydev Unadkat caught and bowled the Mumbai skipper in the last over to turn the table. Unadkat had dismissed Hardik Pandya (13) earlier in the same over to put pressure on Rohit, which he failed to carry.

Ben Stokes also took two wickets for Pune, dismissing Buttler and Karn Sharma (11).

Washington Sundar, Daniel Cristian, and Imran Tahir claimed the wicket of Patel, Rana and Kieron Pollard (9) respectively to join the carnival.

For Pune, it was the 76-run opening wicket partnership stand of Ajinkya Rahane and Rahul Tripathi that drove Mumbai to a comfortable total of 160 runs for the loss of six wickets.

Rahane scored 38 runs off 32 balls, while Tripathi made 45 runs at an impressive strike rate of 145.16.

No other batsmen managed to contribute much in Pune's innings.

Karn Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah led Mumbai's bowling attack as they claimed two wickets each.

Old-timers Mitchell Johnson and Harbhajan Singh joined the party after dismissing Ben Stokes (17) and Steve Smith (17) respectively.
