10 killed as Utkal Express derails in Muzaffarnagar

Ten people were feared dead and nearly 30 others injured when six coaches of the Kalinga-Utkal Express derailed near Khataulli station in Muzaffarnagar district at around 6pm on Saturday. The number of dead and injured can go up as many were still trapped, authorities said.

Utkal Express 18477, coming from Puri in Orissa and going to Haridwar, derailed near Jagatpur colony of Khataulli. The train was scheduled to reach Haridwar at 9pm.

One of the derailed coaches hit a house along the track. The derailment is suspected to have caused due to a damaged track. Sources said the mishap could be the result of sabotage.

Officials said rescue work was going on in full swing.

All senior officials from Meerut and Muzaffarnagar rushed to the spot. A fleet of ambulances has been rushed to the accident spot and hospitals have been put on alert .
