Three militants of the Hizbul Mujahideen terror outfit were on Tuesday arrested by the police in Kulgam area of South Kashmir.

Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police (DGP), SP Vaid, identified the militants as Mudasir Ahmed Baht of Awantipura, Iqbal Lone of Shivpura Srinagar and Mohammad Amin Bhat of Qamar Kapran, Verinag. The arrested militants are locals and belong to Kashmir.

With new police policy of not registering any case against those who return to the mainstream, reportedly many newly recruits in various terror outfits were keen to surrender but were not doing so because of the fear of being killed by terrorist leaders.

On November 17,  a college student and footballer Majid Arshid, who had joined the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), surrendered before security forces. He was with the LeT terror outfit for one week.

Arshid had surrendered by walked into a security camp in south Kashmir with his arms and ammunition. He was taken away to an undisclosed destination for further investigation.

His surrender followed after appeals were made by his parents and Jammu and Kashmir Police. His parents had gone on television and social media to ask him to surrender.

A video showing his mother Asiya Khan crying and asking him to come home went viral on social media.

Days after Arshid surrendered to the security forces, a youth from Chimmar village in Kulgam district, Naseer Ahmad returned to the mainstream, according army officials.

Ahmad had joined militancy in September. He recently contacted his family and told them he wanted to return home, police said.

Earlier, in an effort to bring Kashmiri-origin militants into mainstream, the Army had said that surrender of local militants will be accepted even if these are made during gun battles with security forces.
