Launching a scathing attack on the Union government, Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi on Monday said steps taken by Prime Minister Narendra Modi “without consulting anyone” have badly damaged the country’s economy.

On day one of his three-day campaign for the Gujarat Assembly elections, the Congress leader said: “Without consulting anyone, Narendra Modi took steps that badly damaged the Indian economy.”

“While small businesses and shopkeepers were still recovering, Modi ji introduced GST which only added to their woes. He (Modi) has no sympathy for the poor and downtrodden people of this nation but the rich have access to everything under this regime,” he added.

The 47-year-old Congress scion is on a whirlwind tour of the Saurashtra region, which sends one-third of the legislators in the 182-member State Assemly, from the famous religious town of Dwarka.

He began his tour by offering prayers at the Dwarkadheesh temple in Dwarka and will be interacting with locals of Jamnagar at various educational institutions, women and businessmen.

The Saurashtra region has been electorally tough for the Congress for the last two decades and it won only 12 of the 52 seats here in the 2012 assembly elections.

This time the party is looking at significantly improving the tally given the Patidar sentiment against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the overall farmer distress owing to various issues.
