Salt prices have been hiked in Manipur, Assam and Nagaland after the outbreak of rumours about the scarcity of salt. In an unusual occurrence, a packet of 1 kg salt that costs Rs 15 or 17 was found being sold between Rs 100 to Rs 200 in Imphal, Thoubal, Bishnupur, Ukhrul and Jiribam in Manipur.
Meanwhile, the state&’s Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister, Mr M Okendro, appealed to the public to stop panic-buying of salt. If anybody found grocery shops selling salt at high prices, the matter could be immediately reported at 18003453821 or 0385-2451039. Civil Society Organisations of Manipur appealed to the people not to believe the rumours.
