Twitterati reacted with grief, shock and rage at the suicide of a girl from Tamil Nadu, who hanged herself after she couldn’t get admission in a medical college despite having performed exceptionally well in the Class 12 board exam.

S Anitha, 17, who had scored 1,176 marks out of 1,200 in her Class 12 Tamil Nadu board exams, reportedly committed suicide on Friday as she couldn’t perform well in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and couldn’t join a medical college. She was found hanging at her house, media reports said.

She had approached the Supreme Court with the plea that it should not insist on a common entrance exam for medical colleges. Daughter of a daily wager, Anitha belonged to a Dalit family.

The news generated widespread reactions, including those from movie stars Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.
“What has happened to Anitha is extremely unfortunate. My heart goes out to her for all the pain and agony she would have undergone before taking this drastic step. My condolences to her family,” said Rajinikanth on Twitter.

Talking to mediapersons, Haasan said he was deeply upset with Anitha’s suicide.

Twitterati expressed grief at the death of Anitha and held the system responsible for her suicide. ”

Deeply saddened to hear that DOCTOR Anitha is no more…. it’s not a suicide, but it’s a MURDER. Shame on the education system! #NEET,” wrote one Bharathan.

“Suicide of Anitha who got 1176/1200 in Board exams & couldn’t get Medical seat bcos of #NEET is a tragedy. #RIPAnitha ½,” posted one Sumanth Raman.

The Supreme Court last year had ordered all medical colleges across the country to use NEET to decide admissions. Tamil Nadu requested for exemption to the state board students, saying it was more apt for students who study in CBSE schools. The top court exempted the state from NEET last year, but refused a request to continue the exemption this year.
