Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday met ailing DMK chief Karunanidhi at his residence in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Modi arrived at the former Tamil Nadu chief minister’s residence in Gopalapuram at around 12.15 pm and was received by Karunanidhi’s son MK Stalin, who is also the acting president of DMK and daughter Kanimozhi.

Karunanidhi, 93, has been wheelchair-bound since 2010. He has been getting medical treatment at home. Karunanidhi fell ill in October, 2016 due to a drug- induced allergy.

Before the meeting, Modi spoke at the 75th anniversary celebrations of Tamil daily Dina Thanthi and called upon the media to “take a lead in the battle against climate change” as rain-hit Tamil Nadu limps back to normalcy.

Upon his arrival in the state, he assured Tamil Nadu of full assistance from the Centre to handle the situation arising out of heavy rains and floods.

“On landing in Chennai, PM Narendra Modi discussed the situation arising due to heavy rains and floods in Chennai and other parts… with the Chief Minister (K. Palaniswami) and Deputy Chief Minister (O. Panneerselvam)…

“He assured them of all assistance from the Centre,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a tweet.

At least 14 persons have lost their lives due to heavy rains in the state last week.
