Wearing a broad smile and flashing the victory sign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the media personnel outside Parliament House on Monday as the BJP looks set to win both Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh Assembly polls.

As Modi got down from his BMW 7-series sedan, he greeted the media with folded hands and a smile and just before entering the complex he flashed the victory sign.

Meanwhile, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the BJP will get “clear majority” in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh as early trends indicated a victory for the party in both the states.

“The trends are on expected lines… we will get clear majority in both states. We will form the government,” Rajnath told reporters outside Parliament House.

Gujarat’s ruling BJP pledged to retain power as its candidates forged ahead of the main opposition Congress in 108 of the 182 Assembly seats, 16 more than the half-way mark needed to control the House.

The ruling Congress trailed to the BJP in Himachal Pradesh. Officials in counting centres said that the BJP candidates were ahead in 42 seats and the Congress in 23.

Trends from counting centres had indicated a see-saw battle for about 45 minutes, with the Congress at times inching ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party in both the states.

But ultimately the BJP sprinted ahead and on similar lines as exit polls had predicted.
