The NDA presidential candidate, Ram Nath Kovind, filed his nomination in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top leaders on Friday. Also present were senior BJP leader Lal Krishan Advani and party chief Amit Shah.

The election is on 17 July, where he will face opposition’s nominee Meira Kumar. The counting of votes will take place on 20 July.

The term of President Pranab Mukherjee ends on 24 July.

Besides the NDA's constituents, regional parties such as the AIADMK, BJD, TRS and JD(U) have announced their support to the Dalit leader, giving him an edge.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he will accompany Kovind when he files his nomination.

The BJP has said in a statement that Kovind is guaranteed to get more than 61 per cent votes, and the finally tally may increase, depending on how some still-undecided regional parties vote.

Opposition parties had on Thursday announced former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, also a Dalit leader, as their joint candidate against Kovind.

Meira Kumar is expected to file her nomination papers on 27 June.
