Modi pulled down the stature of PM’s office: Congress

Asserting that the ruling BJP at the Centre headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is staring at an imminent defeat in the Uttar Pradesh assembly polls, the Congress party on Sunday accused Modi of showing disrespect to the high office he occupies through his ‘shamshan’ and ‘Kabristan’ remarks.

“The BJP is staring at an imminent defeat in Uttar Pradesh assembly polls and in desperation, Modi unleashed his divisive agenda by talking about 'shamshan and kabristan' (graveyard and cremation ground) and power during Ramzan and Diwali,” Congress leader Manpreet Singh Badal said here on Sunday.

“The Prime Minister should respect his position. Using such words is evidence enough that he has not matched up to the high office that he holds. In fact, Modi has pulled down the stature of Prime Minister's office,” the Congress leader further said.

Badal sought to remind the Prime Minister that “These are not the ideas that constitute India. This is a country in which a hundred flowers bloom. It is high time that Modi behaves like a Prime Minister.”

The Congress leader accused Modi of only giving slogans and doing little during the last over two and half years of his rule at the Centre. “Schemes have only become slogans. Promises have been reduced to lip service and welfare limited to events,” he alleged.

Badal pointed out that against the Central government’s plans of providing Rs 10,000 crores to the fledgling companies so far only Rs 5.66 crore has been distributed under the Prime Minister’s ‘Startup India’ initiative.

The Centre has also made a U-turn on giving farmers 50 per cent profit besides the cost of production as support price, Badal alleged and charged the government of ‘playing a game of deception’ in the name of development.
