Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed passed away on Thursday morning at a Delhi hospital after prolonged illness.

The 79-year-old leader of the People&’s Democratic Party (PDP) was admitted to Delhi&’s All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on December 24 and was being treated for sepsis, decreased blood counts and pneumonia.

His condition had gradually worsened and remained in the Intensive Care Unit of AIIMS as his platelets dropped dangerously low.

Sayeed took over as chief minister of PDP-BJP coalition on March 1 last year.

According to reports, Sayeed&’s daughter Mehbooba Mufti will succeed him as the next chief minister of the state.
