Rights body raps J&K forces over Amarnath agitation
SRINAGAR, 21 JUNE: The Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has indicted the security forces for not adhering to standard operating procedures while dealing with the protesters during the Amarnath land row agitation in 2008 that left 63 protesters dead. The commission, which has only powers to recommend action, asked the state government to constitute a-high-level enquiry to identity the persons who “lapsed and erred” in their discharge of official functions. pti
SHO suspended, four others booked for torture
MUKTSAR, 21 JUNE: A station house officer has been suspended while his three colleagues were booked for allegedly torturing and wrongful confinement of a youth of Danewala village, officials said. Malout SHO Rameshwar Singh and three policemen have been booked on charges of wrongful confinement and torturing a youth identified as Gurlal Singh of Danewala village near Malout. pti
Slain journalist&’s wife appointed primary teacher
IMPHAL, 21 JUNE: Thangjam Ongbi Narmada Devi, wife of journalist Thangjam Dwijamani who was killed in police firing in Imphal on 23 December last year, has been appointed a primary teacher by the state government. JAC against the killing of Thangjam Dwijamani stated this during a Press meet held at Thangmeiband Sinam Leikai. Co-convener of the JAC, Leishangthem Pratap, said with the appointment of the deceased&’s wife the JAC has been dissolved. He said the government has fulfilled all the demands of the JAC. He said the Directorate of Education issued the appointment order on 15 June, 2013. sns
