As the political heat intensifies in poll-bound Himcahal Pradesh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Saturday address two public rallies in Kangra and Mandi, officials said.

The hill state will go to polls for 68 assembly seats on November 9 and with just a few days left, both the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have upped the ante against each other, desperate to woo the voters.

In his earlier rallies, PM Modi had launched an all out attack against Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi and the incumbent Himachal Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.

Modi had mocked the Congress’ poll manifesto promising to end corruption in the hill state and instead alleged that under the Virbhadra regime, the mining, forest and rug mafias have flourished.

The BJP has projected its two-time former Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal as its Chief Ministerial candidate in the state.

For both the Congress and the BJP chief ministerial faces, it’s literally a do-or-die battle as 83-year-old Virbhadra Singh and 73-year-old Dhumal fight for their political survival.

For almost two decades, both the parties in the state have fought almost every assembly and parliamentary polls under their leadership.

Interestingly, both Virbhadra Singh and Dhumal are seeking re-election from new seats and that is not going to be easy for them.

The future of the arch rivals will be pronounced on December 18, the day the votes cast will be counted along with those in Gujarat.

In Himachal Pradesh, Congress won 36 of the 68 seats in 2012 with a vote share of 42.81 per cent, while the BJP bagged 26 seats with a 38.47 per cent vote share.
