Congress President-elect Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said after the first round of voting in Gujarat Assembly elections, he was confident that the Congress will form the next government in the state.
Addressing the media in Ahmedabad on the last day of campaigning before the second phase of polling on December 14, the Gandhi scion said there was a “strong undercurrent” in Gujarat and the result will be astonishing.
“After first round we are confident that we are winning the polls in Gujarat… There is a strong undercurrent in Gujarat and the result will be astonishing,” Rahul Gandhi said, a day after he was named the President of the country’s oldest political party.
“Elections are won on the narrative of issues related to development. BJP has completely failed to build this narrative,” he added.
Claiming that the current Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), in power for 22 years, has only favoured the rich, the Gandhi scion said the Congress government will ensure “balanced vikas” (development) in the state.
“Congress will take forward Gujarat with balanced vikas (development) unlike the BJP which has catered to a coterie of rich industrialists,” he said.
“PM Modi used to talk about corruption all the time. But after Jay Shah case and Rafale deal were revealed, he stopped using the word corruption altogether,” he added.
“People of Gujarat are very intelligent, they can see that PM Modi is not talking about corruption or farmers in his rallies. I am actually little surprised, I had expected BJP to fight with more strength,” he said further.
The second and final phase of the Gujarat Assembly election is due on Thursday. The results will be out on December 18.
