Dera will have to pay for losses: High Court

Taking a strong note of loss of lives and properties in the violence post-conviction of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh in a rape case, the Punjab and Haryana high court has said that the sect will have to pay for the damages.

Ram Rahim was convictd by a special CBI court in Panchkula on Friday and thousands of his followers who had convereged there went on rampage. At least 12 died in the violence in addition to loss of properties worth several crores.

The high court asked the administration to make a list of the properites owned by the Dera. The court said this while hearing an ongoing petition about the aftermath of the rape case verdict against Ram Rahim.

The hearing started at 4.30pm, during which the court also directed the Centre to provide additional forces to Punjab, which told the court that the situation was bad in the state and arson had taken place at several places.
