Punjab shares a 553-km long international border with Pakistan which is guarded round-the-clock by BSF troopers. Strict vigil is maintained along the border at all times.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Barendra Modi wished the nation on Diwali and shared a message on social media and said “Diwali ke pawan parv par sabhi deshvasio ko hardik shubhkamnaye #HappyDiwali to everyone! (On the auspicious occasion of Diwali, greetings to the nation).”

Cricketer Yusuf Pathan on Thursday exchanged sweets and greeting with BSF  soldiers at the Baroda airport on the occasion of Diwali and shared a message on social media saying, “Salute to the jawans who are working even on the festival day.”

The festival of Diwali celebrates the victory of light over darkness, goodness over evil and justice over injustice. Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major Hindu festival celebrated with much pomp across the country.

Popularly known as the festival of lights, Diwali is also celebrated by Hindus in Nepal, Malaysia, Mauritius and Pakistan. According to the Hindu holy books, the festival marks the return of Lord Ram from Sri Lanka to Ayodhya after defeating Raavan.
