Outgoing Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday said newly elected party chief Rahul Gandhi has bore the brunt of violence since childhood and the blatant personal attacks have made him stronger.

“Rahul is my son, so I do not think for me to praise him is right but I would say that since childhood he had to bear the brunt of violence,” said Sonia in her speech congratulating Rahul for his elevation.

“After joining politics he had to face blatant personal attacks, that have made him a stronger person,” she added.

Attacking the ruling Narendra Modi government, Sonia said the country’s foundation were being attacked and there was an environment of fear.

“Our country’s foundation and shared traditions are being attacked, there is an environment of fear,” she said.

“Since 2014 we have been playing the role of opposition, the challenge that we face today, is the biggest one, our constitutional values are being attacked, our party has also lost many elections but our party will never bow down,” she added.

In a major shift at the top of India’s grand old party, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday took over the reins of the Congress from his mother Sonia Gandhi who held the top post for 19 years.

The party’s Central Election Authority president Mullapally Ramachandran handed over the Certificate of Election to Rahul Gandhi at around 11 am bringing the curtains down on Sonia Gandhi’s tenure.

The Gandhi scion was flanked by former PM Manmohan Singh and his mother on the state while sister Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra were present in the audience.
