Reacting to BJP’s stellar show in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Monday said the party has “created history” in Gujarat by beating 22 years of incumbency.

“This is a glorious victory for the BJP. We have created history in the state,” Chouhan told the media after trends indicated a clear majority for the BJP in both the states.

“We want to thank the voters and the lakhs of hardworking party workers,” he added.

Chouhan further said that by defeating the Congress in Himachal, BJP has come a step closer to “Congress mukt Bharat” (Congress free India).

“The Congress is in power in Karnataka and Punjab but soon elections will be held in Karnataka and I am confident that BJP will win them,” he said.

After trailing for a while, the BJP is all set to from the next government in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh after crossing the half-way mark in both the states.

Trends from counting centres across Gujarat put Bharatiya Janata Party candidates ahead in 108 seats while Congress nominees were forging ahead in 72 constituencies. The Gujarat Assembly has 182 seats.

In Himachal Pradesh, the BJP has registered an overwhelming majority and was leading in 44 of the 68 seats and the Congress was ahead on 21 seats.

Trends from counting centres had indicated a see-saw battle for about 45 minutes, with the Congress at times inching ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party in both the states.

But ultimately the BJP sprinted ahead and on similar lines as exit polls had predicted.
