Four things about the fragrant herb oregano make it a good substitute for medicines to treat many common ailments - antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory. Loaded with nutrients such as iron, manganese, calcium, vitamin E, vitamin K, calcium, omega fatty acids and fibre, oregano has many health benefits.

BENEFITS

The wonder herb offers a natural treatment for various infections, including respiratory and urinary tract infections, menstrual cramps and gastrointestinal syndrome.

It promotes bone growth and maintains bone density. Hence, it is good for osteoporosis.

Oregano may slow down or even prevent the advancement of few types of cancer.

It has the potential to manage type 2 diabetes.

CAUTION: Some people are allergic to this spice. If you are allergic to it, be cautious! You may develop some allergic reaction to it.

TIPS – Use fresh oregano. It should be stored in refrigerator wrapped in a damp cotton cloth. It can also be kept in freezer in air tight containers for long use. Heat can easily steal its delicate flavour. So add it towards the end of the cooking. If you are using its dried form, it can be added at the beginning of the cooking. Store the dried one in an air tight container in a cool and dry place. It can be safely and effectively used till six months from the date of packaging.

It goes well with pizza, garlic bread, pasta, soups, Italian salads, lasagne, baked mushroom and baked cheese vegetables. Sprinkle oregano in your food for good health and taste.
