Lots of love, tons of tears, big betrayals, constant catfights, abundance of abuses mixed inappropriately and disproportionately in high decibel (noises) with twists are the secrets (known to only a few like you!) that spice up the Bigg Boss — a controversial reality show served to the Indian audiences since 2006.
Currently in its ninth edition, the Indian version of Big Brother manages to grab many eyeballs as two real-life couples, Kishwer Merchant and Suyyash Rai, and Rochelle Rao and Keith Sequeira, (and a few would-be couples, Prince Narula and Nora Fatehi?) live under the same roof with cameras watching them from every corner of the house set up in Lonavala, near Mumbai.
Well, love knows no restrictions. Irrespective of the cameras prying in their lives, the head-over-heels in-love couples often get intimate, especially after the lights are turned off and fill the air with romance.
But, they are not the only ones to have bared it all in front of the camera! From the swimming pool to bedrooms to locked washrooms to smoking area, the Bigg Boss house rocked with some "real" lovey-dovey moments and audiences can't help but remain glued to the screens.
Remember Karishma Tanna-Upen Patel, Gauahar Khan-Kushal Tandon, Pooja Bedi-Akashdeep Saigal and Anupama Verma-Aryan Vaid? Although they went inside as individual contestants, they walked out hand-in-hand or in their lover's arms like the distressed Gauahar in Kushal's arms!
Take a trip down the memory lane to season seven, now-separated, then-rumored couple Tanishaa Mukherjee (Kajol's younger sister, just in case you haven't watched Neel n Nikki and her Bigg Boss saga) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo's evil man Armaan Kohli's pictures went viral on the Internet as they got lost in the moment (or, romantic) inside the Bigg Boss house 'forgetting' that they are on a television show and in spite of host Salman Khan's repeated warnings!
While we talk about love and love-making, how can we miss Gauti boy! Albeit the fact that the previous season's winner Gautam Gulati's in-house romance with supermodel Diandra Soares fizzled out even before their in-house journey ended, Gauti earned the coveted title of being the 'Emraan Hashmi' of the house as he locked lips with the pretty (pink-haired) model behind closed doors in the washrooms again and again. In the meantime, "Diandra Diandra Let's Go to Bandra" created ripples inside the Bigg Boss house and in the outside world too. Such was their love --- short and sweet!
Yet, there were some celebrities who neither waited for the lights to be turned off nor bothered to bolt any door to express their love! And no prizes for guessing the names of season four contestants --- Murder actor Ashmit Patel and Pakistani beauty Veena Malik who top the list.
Love does make the world go round!
But, what really gets the temperatures soaring inside the Bigg Boss house are the fights that make these celebrities lose their temper and reveal the ugly side of their personalities.
The bizarre tasks every week for the luxury budget (just in case you are wondering what these luxuries are --- pickles, green teas, milk, brown bread, a jar of Nutella, etc.) make all the popular and not-so-popular and a few unpopular fellows (aka celebrities) inhabiting the house swear at each other and scream, and cry and crib to defame the opposition team members in an attempt to emerge triumphant (and yes, experience the luxuries).
It won't be surprising if we see Bigg Boss renaming the "Luxury budget tasks" as "Who's the best screamer of the house contest?" anytime soon.
Now, just imagine a Bigg Boss house with the best screamers across all the seasons --- Dolly Bindra, Armaan Kohli, Raja Chaudhary, Imam Siddique, Pooja Misrra --- locked together as house mates. The consequences of such a situation would be terrific to watch as the escalated madness and excitement would have surely led to a serious beating of the eardrums. Probably, this is the reason the makers limit the number of good screamers to two-three in every season (Priya Malik, Prince Narula and Kishwer deserve the title in the current season). Too much fun can be injurious to the eardrums. Sigh!
Within the stipulated noise limits, the ingredients (or lack of it) are, however, sufficient enough to keep the audiences entertained.
It's only inside the Bigg Boss house that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Bhojpuri actor Manoj Tiwari realised the importance of egg in his life, it's only inside this very house that Gautam learnt that a jar of Nutella is enough to keep one happy and Aman Verma started valuing sugar so much so that he even resorted to stealing some!
Away from family, locked inside for three months, the housemates become friends (even soulmates sometimes) to turn foes as the climate changes and then re-unite again at the opportune moment.
Whether it were season eight's P3G (Puneet Issar, Praneet Bhat, Pritam Singh and Gautam) or season six's Urvashi Dholakia, Delnaaz Irani and Aashka Goradia or current season's Prince, Kishwer and Suyyash --- the contestants pull up every trick to stay afloat, avoid nominations and march towards winning the crown. Thanks to that! All the backbiting and betrayals are ubiquitous in the Bigg Boss house and we are introduced to another aspect of our favourite celebrity&’s character (remember Shilpa Saklani Agnihotri!).
While the participants don’t fail to enthral viewers with their antics, the hosts also add their bit to escalate the entertainment level.
What Arshad Warsi did in the first season, Shilpa Shetty in the second and Amitabh Bachchan in the third, Salman Khan has been doing the same for six seasons and that too with utmost ease. Choreographer-director Farah Khan also had a brief stint as the show&’s host in the previous edition and Sanjay Dutt joined Salman in season five. But, there&’s none like Mr. Dabangg!
Bowled over by beauties like Elli Avram and Mandana Karimi and getting jealous of the in-house romance while not approving of the abuses that are hurled and rules broken inside the house, Salman brings in his flavour that add the needed zing to each weekend episode of the show and takes audiences to a new high every time.
The Bigg Boss house has changed the fate of many young actors like Gautam Gulati, adult star Sunny Leone, given a new lease of life to yesteryear actors, including Armaan, for instance and introduced the world to people like Imam and Pooja! But, as the 24 hours are squeezed in one episode as a 45-minute to one-hour show, the viewers are always left wanting for more. Well, doesn’t matter if you love it or hate it, there&’s no escaping from the fact that the mad house of Bigg Boss is unavoidable!
The Indian version of Big Brother manages to grab many eyeballs.
