Engineers of the Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) and Central Public Works Department (CPWD) staged a rally in front of the Delhi Secretariat on Friday to oppose the move of restructuring of the former.

They were protesting the provisions of Unified Command at Executive Engineering (EE) level endangering the public safety and property, creation of two Engineer-in-Chief posts which is unheard of in any government department, assigning of Current Duty Charge in large scale bypassing all rules and seniority, posting of PWD engineers in District Urban Development Agency (DUDA) among others.

The engineers association also submitted a memorandum to the PWD minister Satyendra Jain with their demands in the letter. "All the engineers of Delhi PWD are agitating since the orders were issued on 12 August demanding withdrawal of the same. We have been spearheading all major development activities of the Delhi government for many decades and being encadred posts of CPWD and these are qualitatively and systematically well ahead of all other state govt departments and local bodies," said PR Charanbabu, General Secretary, CPWD Engineers Association.

He also said that the works of many roads, flyovers, hospitals, educational institutions, public buildings, works related to ASIAD in 1982 and recent CWG in 2010 are the achievements of PWD engineers.

"If the present turmoil created in the name of restructuring is not settled, all crucial development works are bound to suffer as the engineers do not want to put the safety of public at risk," stated Charanbabu.

He also demanded the withdrawal of all impugned orders and any future proposals to be made in consultation with all the stake holders.
