The Yogi Adityanath government on Tuesday decided to revoke the accreditation of 2,682 madrasas in Uttar Pradesh after they failed to submit their details despite several reminders and extension of deadline on two occasions.

According to reports, the UP government had in August given a month’s time to all madrasas in the state to register themselves. However, of more than 19,000 madrasas in the state, around 2,682 did not submit their details.

The state government had sought information pertaining to the managing committee of the madrasas, teachers, students and other information by September 15.

The madrasas in UP have been in the cross-hairs of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state government which questioned their patriotism and sought video evidence of their mandatory singing of the national anthem.

The Allahabad High Court on October 2 rejected a petition challenging a UP government order making singing of the national anthem compulsory in all schools, including madrasas, in the state.

The Allahabad High Court stated that each one must respect the national flag and anthem, and thus there is nothing wrong in the decision taken by the state government.
