The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) is all set to begin a door-to-door survey of properties falling under its jurisdiction. An official said the corporation would use maps provided by Geospatial Delhi Ltd. Following those maps, field surveyors would visit all marked properties and collect data necessary to calculate property tax liable to be paid to the corporation along with details of tax already paid by property owners.

The official stated that the exercise would commence in July and was likely to be completed within nine months. The SDMC collected Rs.900 crore as property tax during 2016-17 financial year from nearly 4,50,000 tax payers.

He said that as per the DMC Act, property tax applied to all buildings and vacant lands. By most conservative estimates, there were at least 12 lakh properties which were liable to pay the tax. The department, he said, was hopeful that the exercise of door to door survey would bring all properties in the tax net and hence boost revenue collection.

“We have already collected all the details of properties in Delhi from different sources and also have enough material to determine the use of land. However, door-to-door survey will further strengthen our efforts and leave no properties untouched,” said a senior officer of the corporation.

He claimed that various initiatives taken by the civic body had already shown results. He added that 15 per cent rebate was being offered on full payment of property tax made before 30 June.

"There has been a major surge in tax collection with increase in property tax payers in the first quarter this year. The online collection up to 20 June, 2017 was Rs.80 crore this year from 1,60,000 tax payers as compared to Rs.60 crore from 1,31,000 tax payers during the corresponding period last year," the official said.
