The prestige of heavyweights of different political parties is at stake in this election for local bodies, particularly on the seat of Mayor of Nagarnigum of Meerut, which will take place on 22 November.

This local body election will surely prove to be a litmus test for the leading political parties and their prominent leaders. It surely would also be a mandate on the working of the Modi Government at the centre and Yogi government at the state.

The main contenders for the Mayoral election are from Bhartiya Janata Party(BJP) , Congress, Samajwadi Party(SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party(BSP)

On this seat reserved for woman BJP has given ticket to Kanta Kardam , BSP to Sunita Verma, Congress Candidate is Mamta Moninder Sood and from SP it is Deepu Manothia

Of these candidates of four leading political party only Kardam and Verma are having political experience. Sunita Verma is wife of Yogesh Verma who had contested and lost the last assembly election from Hastinapur seat on BSP ticket. Deepu Manothia is again wife of SP leader Manoj Manothia who managed a ticket for his wife due to his proximity with party leader Atul Pradhan and MLA Rafeeq Ansari.

The challenge is surely bigger for the BJP who has a sitting Mayor Harikant Ahluwalia , MP Rajendra Aggarwal , six MLAs and former state President Laxmikant Bajpayee. The party has been winning this seat for last two times in a row and would surely want to make a hat-trick. To woo the voters in its fold in this local body election party is leaving no stone unturned . Hence CM Yogi Adityanath himself is coming to turn the winds in favour of party candidates through campaigning here in Meerut and MuzaffarNagar on November 18. Apart from the VIP campaigning the party is also banking upon a highly organised campaign on social media .

Similarly it is a do-and-die situation for BSP’s Yogesh Verma . He himself had lost the assembly election and now is putting in all his resources to ensure victory for wife Sunita whose association with politics had been through her husband .  However she was also Panchayat  Adhyaksh from 2000 to 2005 .Party’s heavy weight Yakub Qureshi , who and his son Imran both failed to make inroads to the state assembly in the last election also have a responsibility to deliver goods for the party and revive it’s lost glory. SP too is sailing in the same boat. Since the party ticket has been given to Atul Pradhan and Rafeeq Ansari’s close side’s wife Deepu Manothia their prestige is also at stake. Former UP minister Shahid Manzoor and former district president of the party Jaiveer who are considered as party stalwarts here however have taken a backseat well knowing that it is the testing time for the party.
