Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Rahul Gandhi after he took charge as Congress president on Saturday .

“Congratulations Rahul ji for this big responsibility and our best wishes for all ur endeavours,” Kejriwal tweeted.

The 47-year-old Rahul Gandhi succeeds Sonia Gandhi, who led the party for the last 19 years. His elevation comes just two days before the Assembly election results of Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.

The party’s Central Election Authority president Mullapally Ramachandran handed over the Certificate of Election to Rahul Gandhi at around 11 am, on Saturday.

The Gandhi scion was flanked by former PM Manmohan Singh and his mother on the state while sister Priyanka Gandhi and her husband Robert Vadra were present in the audience.

Rahul Gandhi is the 49th president of the party and the sixth member of the Nehru-Gandhi family to occupy the top post in its 131-year-old history.

He became the Congress Vice President in January 2013 and his elevation has been much talked about in party circles for around two years.

The country’s oldest party had to complete the entire electoral process by December 31 as per the deadline set by the election commission.
