HP governor to launch state Olympics Games

The WWE wrestling star ‘The Great Khali’ alias Dalip Singh Rana and Governor Acharya Devvrat would inaugurate HP state Olympic Games on 22 June in Hamipur, around 140 km from here.

A number of Bollywood celebrities are also expected to be present at the opening ceremony which is being called the 'biggest initiative for India's Olympic dreams since independence.'

Tournaments of 11 games namely Hockey, Athletics, Boxing, Basketball, Judo, Kabaddi, Volleyball, Wrestling, Kho-Kho, Weightlifting and Shooting will be held in Hamirpur from 22 to 25th June. Around 50,000 sports enthusiasts from across the state are likely to participate in the games.

HP Olympic Association president and Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur said the Olympic Torch Run has received overwhelming response across the state. “We are confident that the Games will gather an even bigger number in terms of participation,” he said.

Thakur said the main behind organizing games is create an environment and platform for upcoming sports persons whereby their talent can be discovered at the grassroots and then nurtured to the point where they may one day represent India at the Olympic Games.

”We firmly believe this initiative will win us a medal in the Olympic Games in the years to come,” he said.
