Despite the top court’s order banning the sale of firecrackers to curb pollution in national capital, a Delhi BJP leader on Tuesday distributed sacks full of firecrackers to slum children in Hari Nagar area of west Delhi.

The party leader, Tajinder Bagga tweeted photos of him giving out packets of firecrackers to the children and clarified that distributing firecrackers was not a contempt of court.

“If firecrackers have to be banned, it should be implemented around the year. By banning them ahead of Diwali, you are just targeting a Hindu festival,” Bagga told media persons.

“What’s Diwali for children without firecrackers?” he asked.

“Some media friends (are) asking, (whether) this is contempt of Court? No, Court banned selling, we are distributing free, 2nd (secondly) bursting (of firecrackers) is allowed,” he said further.

The top court had by its November 11, 2016 order banned the sale and stocking of firecrackers, lifted the ban was lifted on September 12 this year, but, on a plea for the recall of the September 12 lifting order, the top court restored the ban till October 31, saying the September 12 order would come into operation from November 1.

The top court by its October 9 order had said that the impact of the ban on the sale of firecrackers on the air pollution in Delhi on Diwali should be tested at least once.
