7 members of a family killed, 5 injured in accident

Seven members of a family including four women and a 15-year-old girl were killed while five others suffered injuries as the jeep in which they were travelling in fell into gorge in Nerwa area of Shimla district of Himachal Pradesh, around 130 km from here.

Police said the family had gone to Churdhar Temple in Simaur district and they were returning to their home in Shillai area under Paonta Sahib tehsil at the time of accident.

The incident took place at around 11 p.m. near Gumma in Nerwa area when the occupants of ill-fated Bolero jeep were returning to their home in Shillai area of Sirmaur district.

“The driver lost control over the vehicle while negotiating a sharp turn due to which the jeep fell into 200 ft deep gorge. The impact of fall was such that the vehicle was completely mangled and six persons killed on the spot,” Police said.

A police team was rushed to the spot as soon as they received information about the accident and the injured were rushed to a hospital in Nerwa where one of them succumbed to the injuries. Meanwhile, the five injured were rushed to India Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) where the condition of two of them is stated to be critical.

Police officials said the deceased have been identified as Sandi Devi (43), Sushama (30), Nisha (25), Ravina (27) and Kailash (22), Gulab Singh (41) and Shivani (15).

The injured have been identified as as Kapil, Kalyan Singh, Dimple, Sakshi and Rabina. An immediate relief of Rs 50,000 has been given to the families of deceased and Rs 5,000 to injured persons.

A case has been registered in this regard and further investigations in the matter are on.
