Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar on Saturday said three schemes of his Ministry, MGNREGA, Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G) and Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), had generated a
record 813.76 crore mandays of work in the last three years.

Addressing the media on the achievements of his ministry in the last three years of the Modi Government, Tomar said under MGNREGA, in 2016-17, more than 1.23 crore assets were geo-tagged and placed in public domain and about 96 per cent of wage payments were electronically credited into the accounts of the workers through DBT system.

So far, 8.73 crore workers’ Aadhaar numbers have been seeded in NREGASoft (MIS) and 4.73 crore have been enabled for Aadhaar based payment with their consent. The minister said job card verification and updation was taken up on priority during 2016-17 and more than one crore job cards have been deleted after verification. The Centre will hold meetings with states to fix MGNREGA wages as per a better price-index, he added.

Referring to the rural housing scheme, Tomar said in line with the government’s stated objective of “Housing for All” by 2022, the government intends to provide houses to one crore poor people by 2019 in rural areas. A total of 34.82 lakh houses have been constructed from 2014-15 to 2015-16, against a target of 45.98 lakh houses under the erstwhile scheme of Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY). During 2016-17, 32.14 lakh houses have been completed with an expenditure of Rs. 16,074 crore under the revamped scheme PMAY-G. The minister said providing safe drinking water was one of the topmost priorities of the government and it was committed to providing tap water on a sustained basis in every household by 2030 as per the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for which Rs 23,000 crore of Central funds will be required annually till the target is achieved.

Referring to the launch of National Water Quality Sub Mission on Arsenic and Fluoride to provide safe drinking water to about 28,000 affected habitations by March 2021 at a cost of Rs 25,000 crore, Tomar said there will be no discrimination of funds against any state to address the twin challenges of drinking water and sanitation.

Tomar said under the 14th Finance Commission, the Centre will be releasing more than Rs 2 lakh crore to Gram Panchayats for five years to undertake physical and social infrastructure projects in the villages. Minister of State for Rural Development Ram Kripal Yadav said the scheme to empower women through self-help groups had succeeded tremendously.
