Bulls return to market; Nifty trades above 9,100 mark

Despite mixed Asian peers, domestic equity markets extended Thursday’s gains and traded higher in the first half of trade on Friday with banking stocks leading the rally.

At 11.20 am, the BSE Sensex was trading 127 points or 0.43 per cent higher at 29,459 while the NSE Nifty was trading 33 points or 0.36 per cent higher at 9,119.

Broader markets were trading in line with key benchmark indices. BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices surged 0.4 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively.

Among the BSE sectoral indices, Bankex index was the lead gainer with a jump of 1.4 per cent. Consumer Durables (0.8 per cent), Metal (0.8 per cent), Realty (0.8 per cent) and Telecom (0.7 per cent) indices were other notable gainers. IT and Teck indices slipped 0.3 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively.

On Thursday, the BSE Sensex had closed 165 points or 0.56 per cent higher at 29,332 and the Nifty had closed 56 points or 0.62 per cent up at 9,086.

Top gainers in the Sensex-30 pack: ICICI Bank (up 3 per cent), SBI (up 2.2 per cent), ITC (up 1.3 per cent), Bharti Airtel (up 1.1 per cent) and Power Grid (up 1 per cent).

Top losers in the Sensex-30 pack: ONGC (down 0.6 per cent), TCS (down 0.6 per cent), Adani Ports (down 0.5 per cent), Cipla (down 0.4 per cent) and Bajaj Auto (down 0.4 per cent).

Asian markets were trading with mixed moves. Japan’s Nikkei 225 Index jumped 0.9 per cent, Singapore’s Straits Times Index shined 0.2 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index lost 0.3 per cent, Korea’s KOSPI index declined 0.2 per cent and China’s Shanghai Composite Index inched up 0.1 per cent.

US markets closed marginally down on Thursday. Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped around 0.1 per cent each.

Back home, the Rupee was trading eight paise higher at 65.49 against the US Dollar.
