The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposed law to recognise universities that have been training teachers without permission from a statutory body, making their alumni eligible for government jobs.
The Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the amendment of the National Council for Teacher Education Act, 1993, which will grant retrospective recognition to universities that are found to be conducting teacher education courses without permission of the NCTE, an official statement said.
The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) is the statutory body set up under the act in 1995 to formally oversee standards, procedures and processes in the education system.
